How Our Cat Fence Installation Service Works

At CatFence Ltd, we specialise in cat fence installation across England — helping cats enjoy safe outdoor freedom while giving owners complete peace of mind.
Our invisible FM-based cat fencing systems are professionally installed, fully tailored to your property, and designed to keep your cat safely contained without the need for unsightly barriers.

With over 22 years of experience, our expert team makes installing a cat fence simple and stress-free — from design and installation to full cat training and support.

Every installation is carefully planned, tailored to your property, and designed to give your cat safe outdoor freedom without risk. The process is simple and personal — here’s how it works:

1. Your First Step — Get in Touch

To start, we just need a few details about your property and your cats.
You can either fill in our online quote form or call us on 01628 476475.
We’ll ask for your postcode, property name or number, how many cats you have, and whether you’d like to protect the rear garden, front boundary, or the whole property etc. We will work with you to give you what you want for your cat/s.

2. Creating Your Bespoke Plan

Once we have your details, we locate your property online and use our professional mapping software to measure the area. We will draw and measure out a proposed route.
We  will design a bespoke containment plan, for your cat fence installation  — We can offer options for:

  • Rear-garden-only containment

  • Full-property layouts

  • Front-boundary or partial loops

We then email you an estimate for your property with the proposed layout, plus  tailored pricing.
This may include both DIY and professional installation options so you can compare what best suits your needs and budget.

3. Booking Your Installation

When you decide to go ahead, we take a small deposit and book your installation date.
We will confirm everything to you.

Your  CatFence installer will talk through the fine detail on the day of the installation but we will be here to support you prior to his arrival.

4. On-Site Consultation and Boundary Walk

On installation day, the Installer meets you on site and walks the boundary together with you.
We review trees, slopes, climbing frames, sheds etc and any “natural ladders” your cat might use.
From ground level, we can see the practical details that maps can’t — and agree the exact route for the cable to give your cat maximum freedom and safety.

5. Indoor Training — The First Step for Your Cat

Before we begin the outdoor installation, training starts indoors.
We set up a small indoor training unit so your cat can gently learn how the system works in a calm, familiar environment.
While the engineer installs the outdoor cable, we check in on your cat’s progress and make any necessary adjustments.

6. Installing and Testing the Cat Fence

The boundary cable is installed following the agreed route — buried where needed or fixed neatly along existing fences and borders.
Once complete, we connect the control unit, set up the  signal zone, and fine-tune the system for your cat and your garden.

The new no go zone will be marked with training flags around the boundary.

7. Crossing Driveways and Hard Surfaces with Ease

One common question is how the CatFence system handles driveways or paths. When crossing a tarmac driveway, we simply make a small incision with a grinder, place the cable neatly inside, and then seal it up. This ensures the boundary line remains invisible and fully protected, safe for heavy vehicles to drive over without any risk.

In other words, no matter what your driveway or surface type is, we can keep the boundary neat, secure, and completely unobtrusive.

8. Ongoing Training and Handover

When installation is finished, your engineer continues with the Indoor training.
He will check that your cat is responding the impulse, the collar fit etc and run through what to expect and how to continue with the training.

Our Installer will have already placed white training flags outside along the new boundary — identical to those used indoors — so your cat immediately recognises the safe zone.

We will give you a guide for the outdoor training and leave you with a comprehensive owner’s handbook explaining how to build your cat’s confidence safely over the following days.

Once your cat is fully understanding the indoor system he or she should transfer almost seamlessly to the outdoor system.
