Cat Fences: What Do the Experts Say?
Across the UK, vets, behaviourists and pet charities recommend CatFence systems for their safety, reliability and proven welfare benefits. Many professionals not only endorse our systems but also use them to protect their own cats and dogs. You really can’t get a better recommendation than that.
Whether it’s our outdoor hidden cat fencing or indoor wireless systems, experts agree that vet-recommended cat fences are the most humane and effective way to keep cats safe while allowing them the freedom to explore.
Why Vets Recommend CatFence
Eric McCarrison – Former Vet of the Year
Eric McCarrison is one of many vets who both recommends and personally uses our hidden cat and dog fences.
“My dog weighs 45 kg — if he runs out into the road and a motorcycle hits him, this could cause a human fatality.”
Eric points out that CatFence systems not only save the lives of pets but can also prevent serious road accidents involving people.
Professor Daniel Mills – University of Lincoln
Professor Mills, one of the UK’s leading veterinary behaviourists, has studied cat welfare extensively and supports the use of electronic containment fences.
“In the UK alone, hundreds of thousands of cats are killed or injured on roads each year, and these devices can prevent these often-fatal injuries. In contrast, housing cats solely indoors is linked to obesity, Feline Urologic Syndrome and dental disease.”
He also notes that long-term exposure to indoor flame-retardant chemicals can have toxic side effects for cats. In short, safe outdoor access with a cat fence is the healthiest balance.

The University of Lincoln Cat Fence Study
Published in 2016, the University of Lincoln study examined the long-term welfare of cats using CatFence systems.
Key findings included:
No evidence of long-term welfare problems
Cats effectively contained without stress or fear
Improved confidence and closer relationships with their owners
Dr Jonathan Cooper, Principal Lecturer, explained:
“This study suggests that with invisible electronic fences, cats can be effectively contained without compromising their quality of life.”
The researchers even found that cats using hidden fences were less fearful of new situations than those kept strictly indoors.
Dr Andrew Sloyer – Veterinary Practitioner
“My clients and I both know how wonderful a pet fence system has been for ourselves and our pets. The professionalism and caring attitude from CatFence have far exceeded my expectations. The peace of mind is priceless.”
Feline Friends Charity Recommends Electronic Cat Fences in the UK
Feline Friends Charity Endorsement
The UK cat welfare charity Feline Friends recommends electronic cat fences for owners living near busy roads or where standard fencing fails.
“Feline Friends recommends that cat owners who live near public roads consider installing an electronic containment fence. Too many of us wait until after losing a beloved pet before taking action.”
